When these two systems meet, the transition must be installed correctly to prevent leaks and premature roof damage.

Why the Transition Matters
Rubber roofing and asphalt shingles are installed differently. EPDM is a flexible membrane that relies on adhesives, flashing, and properly detailed seams. Shingles are installed in overlapping courses and depend on the roof’s slope, underlayment, flashing, and drainage system.
The area where these materials meet is therefore especially important. Water, ice, snow, and debris can collect around a poorly designed transition. In NEPA, heavy snowfall and freeze-thaw cycles can make an existing problem significantly worse.
Proper Flashing Is Essential
Flashing creates a water-resistant connection between the two roofing systems. Depending on the roof design, this may involve specialized transition flashing, metal flashing, membrane detailing, or a combination of components.
The rubber membrane should never simply be cut against the shingles and left exposed. The transition needs to account for movement between materials while directing water safely toward the appropriate drainage area.
Roof Slope Must Be Considered
A major consideration is the slope of the roof sections. Asphalt shingles are designed for sloped roofs and require adequate pitch for proper water drainage. EPDM is commonly used on low-slope and flat sections.
When these systems meet, the transition should be designed around the slope and water flow. If water is allowed to back up against the transition, even high-quality roofing materials can eventually develop problems.
Watch for Existing Damage
If you are replacing one roof section while leaving another in place, the existing rubber membrane should be inspected before the new work begins. Look for damaged seams, punctures, membrane deterioration, loose flashing, and drainage problems.
Replacing the shingles without addressing problems in the adjoining rubber roof could leave the property vulnerable to leaks.
